Andalusia

Land rich in landscapes and ancient civilization, fertile soil, snow-capped mountains, white-roofed houses, picturesque landscapes.

The land of light, as the Arabs called the southern part of Spain. Situated at the point where two continents and two seas are separated, it attracts a light that no one can really find elsewhere in the world and its glitter excites thousands of tourists.

It is an ancient settlement inhabited by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Visigoths. It was occupied by the Arabs in the 8th century and of course they had no difficulty settling in Andalusia, where they left their mark.

In Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Malaga, Cadiz and the whitewashed villages on the steep mountain ranges people of music, poetry and spectacle live. The area is considered the home of flamenco, the birthplace of the guitar and the center of bullfights. The painters Mourillo, Diego Velasquez, Valdez Leal, the poets Fernando de Herrera (the divine), Fr. De Rocha, Lopez de Rueda Gustavos Becker, the novelist Mateo Aleman, the sculptor Martinez Montapis, the legend Don Juan were all born in Seville and several painters (Pacheco, Thusbaran) worked there.

Cordoba

The city in which the Latin philosopher and writer Seneca was born. In 929 it became the glorious city of the Islamic caliphate on the Spanish territory. The various cultures – Jewish, Arab & Christian – coexisted peacefully and science and philosophy experienced a period of unprecedented glory. Mescita, once a mosque and now a Catholic church, dominates the center, today it has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Right next to the old Jewish Quarter, the ancient synagogue and the Museum of Bullfighting. The Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos is the fortified 14th-century fortified house, the Arqueologico Provincial Museum, which houses works by Roman, Visigoths, and Arab artists. Within walking distance is the Christian Church Quarter, where you should visit another key point of Cordoba, the Palacio de Viana

Granada

Situated between the highlands and the south bank of the Rio Genil, behind it are the snow-capped peaks of Sierra Nevada. The city enjoyed its greatest splendor between the 13th and 15th centuries, until its decline after the expulsion of the Moors. For 250 years Granada has been the capital of an autonomous kingdom. The main attraction of the Alhambra was erected at this time. The Alhambra, the “red” which derives its name from the red ocher used by the Moors. One of the most spectacular buildings of the Alhambra is the Palacio de los Leones with its famous inner courtyard and the lion’s fountain. In addition to the Alhambra, Granada has more to offer: Albaincin & Mirador is a true jewel of world architecture.

Sevilla

Its population reaches 701,929, but if we add the tourists the population reaches one million. Walking through the Santa Cruz district (old Jewish quarter) you will see white-painted houses, often covered with ivy and jasmine. Thanks to the Arabs, it became one of Spain’s most important cities. It houses one of the most famous monuments in the country, the Giralda (minaret of the old mosque, built of brick and stone). Among the many monuments of the Arab era the visitor can admire the walls, the Golden Tower (Torre del Oro) and the palace A.

We start our tour of the stone Roman bridge of Puente Romano that connects the historic center with the opposite side of the city and enters the quaint Jewish district of Juderia with its narrow cobbled streets and white houses with its iron city balconies. Meskita Temple. The largest – and oldest – Islamic mosque in Europe, a symbol of Cordoba’s golden age, is today an excellent example of the coexistence of the Christian with the Islamic element. Just next to the Bishop’s Palace, which houses the Museum of Fine Arts since 1989, we continue to the medieval Alcazar Palace of Christian Monarchs, where the first discussions of Christopher Columbus’s historic trip to America took place. We will walk the so-called “flower alley”, one of the most picturesque parts of the city, and we will move to the Correa Plateau where the first bullfights of Cordoba began. Departure for Andalusia’s second largest city, Malaga. Malaga is today a thriving port just like it was during the Phoenician, Roman and Mauritanian periods. It also blossomed during the 19th century, when its sweet wine became Europe’s most popular drink, until phylloxera destroyed the vines of the area in 1876. Our tour will start from the 16th century Cathedral, the Alcataba palace, the best preserved palace since the Muslim era in Spain and the castle of Gibraltar, where they create a magnificent architectural complex. We continue to the Plateau de la Mersent where the Museum of Picasso (the birthplace of the famous painter) is located and has a collection of 155 donated works by members of his family. Free time at Syntagma Square, which is at the heart of the city and especially of tourist life, as it is one of the few free spaces in the city and you will see the old town hall (1869), the governor’s house, the prison and the court. We continue our excursion to the cosmopolitan Marbella. In the 1950s, the international jet set discovered the city, and large hotel complexes began to be built. The rich came from all over Europe for the beautiful climate, the sun and the sea. We will admire the beach with its marble-paved palm trees, pedestrian and bicycle lanes and fancy shops. Free time for food and coffee. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight.

Breakfast and departure to visit the famous “Rock of Gibraltar”. The rock of Giberalta, as the Greek sailors call Gibraltar, is known for its impressive height and small colony of about 200 apes that their story wants to cross the Strait in 711 AD. along with the Mauritanians. So we cross the border today – British territory Ground Rock of Gibraltar – and begin our tour. We will start at Europa Point, Europe’s southernmost point across Africa – the ancient Heracles columns – and then climb the “Rock”, passing the old military barracks. The view of the Straits and Africa from above is truly spectacular. Our second stop is the St. Michael’s Cave, with stalactites and stalagmites, which had been converted into a hospital during World War II. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight.

Breakfast and departure for Malaga. It is just 100 km from Gibraltar and 30 km further from the coast of Africa. Along its course are the rivers Guadalemedina and Guadalamorte. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and is widely known as the blessed place, the birthplace of the great Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, so inevitably a hometown of Cubism.

Some of the landmarks we will see:

    Alcazaba (Alcatraz)

From the 8th century to the present it stands as one of the landmarks of the city. Four years later it functioned as a palace for the rulers of the city. Today, the Mauritian Fort operates as the Archaeological Museum of the city. From this imposing building you will be able to get a complete view of the port while bordering on the next sightseeing.

    Cathedral

The “great lady of Malaga”, where the Renaissance marries Baroque. The city’s famous cathedral, though third on the list, is the most important monument, precisely because it stands at the center of it. A truly immense building whose exterior does not foreshadow how beautiful and detailed the interior is. Surrounded by the Spanish cobblestones of Malaga, one cannot help but catch the eye of the passer-by. It is a temple of great interest because in addition to its particular architecture, it lacks the second belfry, which gave it the name of ‘One-Armed Lady’ or ‘La Manquita’ ‘.

    Gibralfaro castle

The ancient castle is located at an altitude of 131 meters above the Alcathava Palace. It dates back to the 10th century and has the most beautiful views of the city and the Mediterranean. Its name derives from the Phoenician word “Jbel-Faro”, which means “Stone of Light”.

    Botanical Garden

This is a real oasis! The words are needless. A tropical atmosphere that will take you even farther. A stroll in the endless “garden” will soothe you as you admire this marvel of Nature. The gardens of Jardin Botanico have been named one of the best in Europe.

Then transfer to the airport for our return flight to Athens via Intermediate.
