PACKAGE OVERVIEW

Barcelona – A Great Holiday Destination!

Barcelona

Spain’s second largest and definitely most cosmopolitan city, and one of the Mediterranean’s busiest ports. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, which is a region of Spain with its own language – Catalan, and it’s own culture and
character.

Barcelona offers the best of both worlds, situated on the Costa Brava on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, the city gently rises up from the coastline
through the city and up into a range of wooded hills.

Famous for breaking ground art, architecture and avant-garde chefs; the city eclipses many other for its creativity and forward thinking.

History

There are two legends that surround the history of Barcelona; one attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules, 400 years before Rome. The second attributes the founding of the city in the 3rd century BC to the Carthaginian ruler Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal.

The Romans took the town over as a military camp, but at the time the city was eclipsed by its neighbour Tarragona. There are some important Roman ruins that were exposed a few years ago under the Placa del Rei (Kings Plaza).

The city was then invaded and occupied by the Moors and later conquered by the Counts of Barcelona.

During the Franco years the region of Catalonia was extremely suppressed with the Catalan language and Catalonian institutions abolished.

The City

Barcelona is a dynamic, open Mediterranean city. It’s the perfect city to relax, stroll around and enjoy its unique way of life.

Barcelona offers so much to the cultural visitor, there is so much to see, something new and interesting awaits around every corner: Gothic architecture, the famous Las Ramblas avenue, Gaudi’s Güel Parc and the unfinished La Sagrada
Cathedral, the old Raval quarter, La Ribera and La Barceloneta, a beachside ravel of corridor style streets where you can find some fantastic local
restaurants and bars, away from the typical tourist area.

Getting around Barcelona is easy. You can pretty much walk around the whole city. They also have a daily rent-a-bike system and the Metro is very good and simple to use.

We will start with CasaBatlló in the middle of PasseigdeGràcia avenue which has been rebuilt with modernism and art nouveau and has gone beyond eccentricity, locals call it Bone House because of its appearance. The series has CasaMilà, also known as LaPedrera which means in the Catalan, the quarry. It was designed between 1906 and 1910 and completed in 1912 to be used as a residence for the wealthy Mila family. Pedera today houses a museum dedicated to Gaudí, the Kaisa de Catalunya Exhibition Center, a furnished museum apartment, as well as private residences inhabited by descendants of original residents. The Gothic Quarter has a series of walks in its narrow labyrinth-like streets that host many antique shops, restaurants and bars. Breakfast at our hotel and departure for our excursion to Mount Montserrat, the beautiful spectacular mountain resort of the Benedictine monks. The Montserrat Monastery is not only a treasure of religious significance but the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is simply incredible. Montserrat’s story is fascinating and began in 880, when a small group of shepherd children saw a glowing light coming down from the sky in the Montserrat Mountains. At the same time the children listened to angels singing and the music filled their hearts with glittering joy. Overwhelmed by the experience, the children ran home to tell their story with intensity. The parents were skeptical, but they knew their children were trustworthy and honest, so they went to the point where the children had experienced the visions to see if they could understand why they were so upset. For the whole month after the first vision their parents also saw the same celestial event and I was left with only one conclusion. Visions were a sign from God. A local pastor came to the point and lived the same experiences as their children and their parents. The visions were presented at the same location in a cave on Mount Montserrat. When this cave was explored by the religious elders of the community a picture of the Virgin was found. And from that moment the cave became a sacred place for religious pilgrimage. Free time to eat. Our next stop at the famous Torres family winery. The news is dominated by the news that the company – which has always been in the hands of the family since 1870 when it built its first winery – won the title of ” the most remarkable winebrand in the world ” in 2014. The tour begins with a video, continues through the Mas LaPlana vineyard, still enters dark tunnels that will gradually illuminate left and right to reveal their huge sized cellars, and returns with the white-green electricity. The sizes at the Penedes winery where the basic volume of wine is aged and matured is enormous. Indicatively, the 4 cells can hold 22,000 barrels, most of which are 300 liters, so feel free to do your calculations. At the end we will be judging and tasting some of their wines. Return to the hotel at around 19.00 and overnight.

Breakfast at our hotel and departure for a very nice excursion. We will start from Figuerre’s hometown of the eccentric artist Salvador Dali where we will visit the museum’s house (15 € admission price) in an impressive building full of creations and constructions (paintings, sculptures, furniture etc.) with unique technique and feel. He was one of the most important painters of the 20th century and was associated with the artistic movement of surrealism. A very eccentric figure who left his personal mark on world art and characterized himself as an artistic genius. A human phenomenon. Free time in the city and for those who want to visit the Museum of Toys, a museum of other things, which has been open to visitors since 1982, which can accommodate both small and large visitors. It exhibits more than 4,000 exhibit toys.
